Dakhla, the Sahara lagoon
Far to the south, a peninsula between the Atlantic and a vast lagoon, now one of the world's top kitesurfing spots.
- You get there by plane, with a connection in Casablanca.
- The lagoon offers wind and shallow water.
- It is a trip in its own right, not a stopover.
What to see
The Dakhla lagoon stretches for dozens of kilometres between the desert and the peninsula. The wind is steady there, which attracts kitesurfers and windsurfers.
The classic outings go to the white dune, which emerges from the lagoon at low tide, and to the sandbanks where the birds land.
The town itself is quiet. You eat oysters farmed in the lagoon and fish caught the same day.
Getting there from Tangier
Dakhla is more than 2,000 kilometres from Tangier by road. You get there by plane, usually via Casablanca.
When to go
All year round. The wind is strongest from spring to late summer.
How long to plan
Five days to a week.
