How much to budget for Tangier

Tangier can be visited on little money: the squares, viewpoints and the Corniche are free. Your budget depends mainly on accommodation and meals.

The essentials in 30 seconds
  • The currency is the dirham (MAD). Keep cash for the medina, taxis and the airport bus.
  • Many of the highlights are free to visit.
  • Documented admission prices per adult: 30 DH (Kasbah Museum), 20 to 50 DH (American Legation), 30 to 80 DH (Caves of Hercules).
  • Meals, accommodation and grands taxis are not priced here, for lack of a reliable, recent source.

What is free

The Grand Socco, the Petit Socco, the Terrasse des Paresseux, the Phoenician tombs, the Corniche and a walk through the Kasbah cost nothing.

What you pay for

Museums, the Caves of Hercules, taxis, meals and drinks on café terraces. Prices change: we mark them "to be checked" until they have been verified.

Documented prices

The table below gathers all the prices we found with a dated source. When two sources contradict each other (American Legation, petits taxis), both are given. Three major items still have no reliable price: accommodation, meals and the grand taxi to the Atlantic coast.

Example 1: a day on foot in the medina

Assumptions: the "A day in Tangier without a car" route, one non-resident adult, entrance to the Kasbah Museum and the Legation, no guide. Entrance fees: 30 + 50 = 80 MAD at most (50 MAD if the 20 MAD rate applies at the Legation). Not counted: cafés, meals, a possible taxi back. Without any paid entrance, the same day costs nothing in visits: the medina, the Grand and Petit Socco, the Phoenician tombs and the Corniche are free to access.

Example 2: Cape Spartel and the Caves of Hercules

Assumptions: one foreign adult, visit to the caves. Entrance: 80 MAD. Cape Spartel, Perdicaris Park and Achakar beach are free to access. Not counted: the grand taxi or the car, whose price is negotiated and which we have not been able to document with a reliable source.

Spending less

Eat where people from Tangier eat, explore the medina on foot, share a grand taxi to Cape Spartel and come in spring or autumn.
