Essaouira, the windy city
A fortified port on the Atlantic, with ochre ramparts and blue shutters, known for its trade winds, its Gnawa music and its relaxed pace.
- The medina, a UNESCO site, is small and flat: everything can be done on foot.
- The wind blows almost all year round: it is a kitesurfing spot.
- About three hours by road from Marrakech.
What to see
The ramparts of the Skala, armed with old cannons, look out over the ocean and the rocks. Below, the fishing port is lively in the morning, with its blue boats and seagulls.
The medina is laid out on a grid of wide streets, which makes it easy to explore. You will find thuya-wood marquetry workshops and galleries there.
The long beach to the south is the domain of windsurfers and kitesurfers.
Getting there from Tangier
Essaouira is mostly reached from Marrakech, in about three hours by road. From Tangier, go via Marrakech or take a flight.
When to go
All year round. Summer is cool and windy there when the interior of the country is stifling.
How long to plan
Two days.
