The American Legation

A piece of United States history in the middle of the medina.

The story

Given by Sultan Moulay Slimane in 1821, this building is the first American public property abroad. It is now a museum: old maps, paintings and a room devoted to Paul Bowles. Not far away in the medina is the tomb attributed to Ibn Battuta, born in Tangier in 1304.

In practice

Why go. Old maps, paintings and a room devoted to Paul Bowles, in a fine medina house.

Who it's for. History buffs. A good option when it rains.

Good to know. The entrance is discreet, in a narrow lane: follow the signs from Rue du Portugal.

Getting there. On foot from the Grand Socco or the Petit Socco.

Recommended time. About 1 h. Entry 20 DH, guided tour 50 DH, according to the Contact page of legation.org (accessed 16 October 2026). Another page of the same site gives 20 DH for residents and 50 DH for non-resident visitors: to be confirmed.
